Report on the Mission in the First Millennium (MFM) Project.
Planning Consultation 14-16 November 1997, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge

1. Introduction

The consultation was set up with a grant from IAMS with a view to developing a project on Patristics and Mission. The consultation was held under the aegis of the Centre for Advanced Religious and Theological Studies (CARTS) of the Faculty of Divinity of the University of Cambridge. In CARTS there are currently two missiological inter-university projects, the North Atlantic Missiology Project (begun in 1996 and directed by Dr Brian Stanley) and Christianity in Asia (begun in 1998 and directed by Dr Archi Lee).

2. The background to the consultation was the formation of the Patristics and Mission Interest Group at the April 1996 IAMS consultation in Buenos Aires.

3. The aim of the consultation was to gather ideas for the proposed project and to write the first draft of the proposal (so there were only two papers and there was plenty of time for free ranging discussion and drafting).

4. Participants

Of those invited the following were able to attend

Canon Graham Kings Lecturer in Mission Studies and Director of the Henry Martyn Centre, Cambridge
Dr Winrich Loehr Lecturer in Patristics, Cambridge
Professor Robert Markus Professor Emeritus of Medieval History, Nottingham
Professor Frederick Norris Professor of Church History Emmanuel School of Religion, Johnson City Tennessee
Professor Miikka Ruokanen Professor of Systematic Theology, Helsinki
Dr Brian Stanley Director of the North Atlantic Missiology Project, Cambridge
Dr Jayakiran Sebastian Lecturer in Patristics, United Theological College, Bangalore
Dr David Thompson Lecturer in Modem Church History and Director of CARTS

5. Papers

Papers were given by Dr Winrich Loehr, "Mission in the First Millennium" and by Dr Jayakarin Sebastian, "Sensitivity and Proclamation: Perspectives on Mission from the writings of Cyprian".

6. Proposals

Symposia and publications are planned for the second quarter of 2001 on "The Encounter of Christianity with other 'Religions': Concepts and Perspectives" and for the 3rd quarter of 2002 on "The Cultural and Political Impact of Christianization".

The Project will also have input into the 1999 International Patristic Conference in Oxford, the yearly North American Patristic Conferences and IAMS 2000 in South Africa.
